Thinker Maker Space, CYENS CoE
CampScape
DESCRIPTION

CampScape is a seven-month project aiming to transform the communal space of Area C in the Pournara First Reception Centre in Cyprus, focusing on creating a humane, welcoming environment for unaccompanied minors (boys) aged 14-17. Developed at CYENS Thinker Maker Space (TMS), the initiative brought together architects and designers from Tunisia, Estonia, Spain, and Brazil, in collaboration with professionals and social experts from CYENS CoE, CODECA, the Asylum Service, and Social Welfare. Using advanced tools like 3D modeling and digital fabrication, the team reimagined the space to serve its residents better.

CampScape’s participatory design approach involved the youngsters through workshops and interviews. By listening to their input, the project created installations that directly catered to their needs, fostering a sense of ownership and empowerment. The result is a modular, multi-functional installation that offers areas for relaxation, socializing, and exercise. Additional improvements were made to enhance the space, such as painting and cleaning containers and surrounding areas. A graffiti mural and a “board wall” where residents can express themselves creatively further enhanced the atmosphere, making the environment more pleasant and personalized. The Ministry of Forests graciously donated trees to be planted on-site in November 2024, adding much-needed shade and greenery to the area.

Throughout the project, CYENS TMS provided continuous support to the creative team through mentorship, tools, and materials, aligning with its mission to foster creativity and innovation, while addressing social issues and contributing to a more inclusive society.
