Hic sunt dracones (2024)

Marta Beauchamp
Hic sunt dracones (2024)
DESCRIPTION

The title hic sunt dracones references the medieval tradition of marking the edges of maps with monsters to symbolise potential dangers in unknown territories. Marta Beauchamp uses her poster from the Critical Data PhD group exhibition as a map for her concert, treating uncharted territory as a utopian space for performance. By blending the iconography of spatial cartography with that of musical scores, the notation hybridizes depiction traditions of space and time. Sound becomes the medium through which the map’s areas are enacted over a duration of time.

Focusing on the translation of neuroscience into sculptural and auditory experiences, Marta Beauchamp shapes an interface for materially encountering these concepts. She explores the difference between understanding through mental retention and understanding through direct experience. By using sound and objects, she transforms dense scientific topics into room-scale installations and performances, offering expanded dimensions for comprehension.
