I Died on Facebook is an artwork that explores the concept of our virtual selves in an increasingly digital world. Through the gamification of death, the work prompts reflection on the impact of our immaterial identities on our physical lives. As more of our activities and interactions shift online, we must consider the fate of our digital counterparts when we die. Do they exist indefinitely, or do they perish too?
The work consists of a VR (Virtual Reality) game experience set in a cemetery, where digital tombstones are named after real deceased individuals whose Facebook profiles have been memorialized by their loved ones. The installation offers different forms of interactivity depending on whether visitors experience it online or on-site, allowing for multi-layered engagement. By gamifying death, the artwork raises critical questions about the implications of our digitized habitat, the impact of our immaterial selves on our physical lives, and the potential consequences of prioritizing our online personalities.

The artwork was created with the support of the Interface Cultures department, at Kunstuniversität Linz, Austria.

MAalex (*2019) is an artistic and curatorial duo formed by Alex Fallica and Martina Pizzigoni. Its mission is to investigate contemporaneity, analysing the context with its social and anthropological nuances. By maintaining a constant focus on the dimensions of relationships, engagement and interactivity, and with an emphasis on digital technologies, MAalex ranges across media and formats, choosing the most effective medium to fulfil its communicative intents. MAalex uses art as a means to shake up consciences and make people question our contemporary world, rejecting the rules of the current merely aesthetic art system and taking the discussion to a political and functional level. Its works embrace a wide range of artistic expressions, from immersive installations to participatory experiences and site-specific artworks. MAalex latest exhibitions include Ars Electronica Festival 2023, Linz (AT), Speculum Artium Festival, Trbovlje (SLO), Pixxelpoint Festival 2023 curated by Nina Jeza and Barbara Jazbec, Nova Gorica (SLO), Recto VRso at Laval Virtual 2024, curated by Judith Guez and Julien Lomet, Laval (FR).
