Tingbao tells the story of a grandfather traveling through time to recover his old memories, retracing his past through the eyes of his younger self. The tale celebrates the natural world, highlighting the power of plants and animals to inspire the imagination. Originally a music collaboration between composer and performer Richard Navarro and flutist Paul Cheneour, the project expanded to include HCI researchers and technologists, fostering creative synergies. Together, they developed various ways to share the story of Tingbao, including a musical podcast, a live theatre performance, and a VR experience.
At the WIP show, visitors will be immersed in the world of Tingbao through an audio-reactive installation featuring the project’s music and artwork by illustrator Greg Stobbs. The exhibition space will be transformed into a mini indoor garden, reflecting the plant-filled flat from the story. The installation encourages playful exploration and multisensory engagement with the work. Postcards with QR codes will link to the podcast and a 360-degree video of the VR experience.
