Empathy Swarm:

Algorithmic Embodiment and Emotional States

Empathy Swarm: Algorithmic Embodiment and Emotional States
Empathy Swarm: Algorithmic Embodiment and Emotional States
DESCRIPTION

Relating to the de_cloud theme of the exhibition, this performative lecture explores the behaviors of artificial lifeforms and how they (seemingly) display different emotional states. Are the intentions of these robotic entities genuine, or do we, as humans, project purpose, emotion, and social motives onto them? Does it matter, or does this imaginary layer help us shape future interactions with our robotic offspring? And is there a risk in our tendency to anthropomorphize technical entities?

During the performative lecture, we will approach the topics of algorithms, empathy, and human-machine interaction from multiple perspectives. The audience will be invited to execute the rules of the AI driving Empathy Swarm, becoming a human swarm themselves. By physically embodying the algorithm, participants will have the opportunity to experiment with their own bodies, fostering a new kind of understanding of robotic lifeforms.

AFFILIATION

This work was realised within the framework of a European Media Art Platform residency at KONTEJNER bureau of contemporary art praxis, co-funded by the European Union.

This presentation was co-funded by NeMe.

Adam Donovan

Katrin Hochschuh and Adam Donovan met through a mutual network of artists, architects and researchers in Switzerland. Hochschuh has an architectural background in digital design and robotic fabrication, exploring architectural geometries, algorithms, swarm simulation and interactivity. Donovan is highly specialised in the fields of robotics and scientific acoustics, researching focused acoustics in multiple fields of his artistic practice. Together Hochschuh and Donovan create sophisticated robotic mechanisms that play with the unobtrusive uncanny systems within us. Their works and machines invoke an otherness or timelessness that is only present in the here and now.
